Character 1: This is where the vehicle was made
Characters 2-3: Identify the manufacturer and division
Characters 4-8: These include the safety information, series, body style/chassis, and engine type

Character 11: The plant where the vehicle was assembled
Characters 12-17: The vehicle serial/production number

What is the history of the VIN Number?

VIN stands for “Vehicle Identification Number”. It is a unique, 17-digit standardized code that can give you information about a vehicles make, model, year, where it was built and assembled, the size of the engine and more. Historical versions of the VIN began showing up on American vehicles in the 1950s when manufacturers added identification numbers to the body or engine of vehicles. In 1981, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) standardized the numbers and since then, all vehicles use the 17-digit VIN as a method of tracking and registration.
